Here you can cycle through beautiful seascapes and feel the atmosphere of old fishing villages. Interesting routes take you to, for example, Tiutinen, Itäranta and further to the Luovi area, where you can even visit an ancient Viking tomb. From Popinniemi’s neighbouring peninsula, Suulisniemi, your journey leads to the picturesque Äijänniemi beach, and through the Äijänniemi forest along a well-maintained dirt road. In addition to Sunila, you can admire the industrial heritage of Karhulanniemi in the Karhula industrial park in Kolmikulma. Wednesdays and Saturdays are market days on which you can grab a tasty lunch at the Karhula market, including the traditional Kotka delicacy ’posso’, a type of sweet doughnut. From the market, it is easy to get to the Karhula Manor area, built by William Ruth, from where there is a memorable route, running under a motorway bridge and along the riverside, to the award-winning Jokipuisto park. Next to the Jokipuisto park is one of the finest sports venues in Finland, the Karhulan keskuskenttä stadium. Past the stadium, you may continue your journey to Korkeakoski, where you can admire old factory buildings and dip your feet in the refreshing river water while sitting on a pier.
